FUNDATIONS
The Arlington Public Schools uses the The Wilson Fundations program to teach phonics and spelling words - a.k.a Trick Words.
The children are expected to learn 25 Trick words in Kindergarten, then 91 more Trick Words in first grade and then 120 more in second grade.
We practice Fundations skills EVERYDAY! We review the sounds of the letters and vowels and then begin putting them all together. We call this "tapping". We use our fingers to help us hear each sound. The Fundations program teaches the students "rules" of the English language that they can apply to their reading and writing. It is a great program.
READING
To become a better reader, the children must practice every day.
We will be reading in a variety of different ways every day.
We will be reading independently during "Read to Self", we will partner read, we will be in reading groups for Guided reading with a teacher and we will read fiction and non fiction as a whole class.
WRITING
We write daily in first grade.
Every Monday we write in our journals. We report on our weekends and then share with the class.
During the week we have several days of "Writer's Workshop". We will be writing personal narratives, then non-fiction, and opinion pieces. We also like to write and respond to literature that we read in class.
